Spiral Out, Keep Going!
Getting in touch with my feminine side, I explored as many loops, twists and curls I could think of for a tattoo design. The idea behind the client’s vision was to knit her daughters names into such expressive forms that it would become equal parts written meaning as well as an elegant floral design. Each version was a challenge to create either perfect symmetry or to create the illusion of balanced asymmetry by offsetting major curves and reflecting minor forms throughout the composition. I found using letterforms as a base much easier to start with than working purely abstractly. Instead you’ll see in the process the gradual moving away from legibility into derived caligraphic forms. I had so much fun noodling around and cross-referencing styles it was sad not to be able to carry over the momentum right away into something else!
